Happy New Year!

by Kristin Walters | Jan 28, 2017

The Chinese New Year, known in modern Chinese as the “Spring Festival”is unlike our festivities. The Chinese New Year is a movable celebration, based on the ancient lunar calendar. It falls on the second new moon after a winter solstice, thus changing each year. This year, we will be celebrating the Chinese New Year on January 28.  Festivities will be taking place until February 12, ringing in the year of the Fire Rooster!

                                         year of the rooster

What does it mean to be a year of the Fire Rooster?

In Chinese astrology, each zodiac year is associated with an animal and an element, such as fire, water, wood, etc. Astrologically speaking, 2017 will be a year dominated by the orientation towards progress, honor and maximum integrity.

How do we celebrate the Spring Festival?

1.  Clean the house

Say farewell to the old year by sweeping the dust away and letting go of what no longer serves us. If you’re quite superstitious, you may want to clean before the new year, as many believe cleaning right after may wash away your new found good luck!

2.  Prepare a feast

Dinner on New Year’s Eve, also known as reunion dinner is considered the most important feast of the year. Chicken and fish are most likely on the table, both served whole. Neither should be picked clean, as it represents a surplus at the end of the year.

3.  Prepare red envelopes

Red envelopes containing money are given out by married couples during the new year. It is believed to bring good luck to the receiver. It is tradition to wait until the seventh day of the new year before opening the envelope!

4.  New Years paintings

Many will place a red sign with the 福 symbol, representing luck or blessings.
