Swedish Covenant Hospital is going “Baby Friendly”!

The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) helps mothers and their babies succeed in breastfeeding. The BFHI is a global initiative of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

How?
Our Family Birthing Center staff, physicians and midwives follow the 10 steps that have been proven to help mothers and babies succeed in their breastfeeding goal.

Why?
Breastfeeding fosters bonding, intelligence and physiological stability. We know that exclusive breastfeeding is great for both the mother and baby’s health—and these benefits last for the rest of their lives!

For babies, breastfeeding decreases
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Ear infections
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Respiratory infections
  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
  • Various cancers
For mothers, breastfeeding decreases
  • Absenteeism from work
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Breast and ovarian cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
What does it mean for Swedish Covenant Hospital?
We are now in our third phase of the BFHI, which means that we are currently raising awareness to ensure that all of our staff, patients and providers are informed about the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding. We are on our way to becoming fully-designated as a Baby Friendly Hospital!
