What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapy begins with a thorough evaluation of your current condition. Each treatment plan is customized to your unique needs and may include:

  • Guided exercises for pain relief and improved strength, endurance and cardiovascular health
  • Stretching exercises for increased range of motion and flexibility, an important and often overlooked aspect of physical fitness
  • Education on proper body mechanics and injury prevention
  • Close coordination and communication with your primary care physician

Benefits and Uses of Physical Therapy

Over time and through hard work, physical therapy can minimize pain, improve strength and mobility and prevent injury. Physical therapy can be used as part of a treatment plan for the following conditions:

  • Arthritis
  • Back and neck injuries
  • Fractures
  • Neurological conditions (stroke, head injury, multiple sclerosis, etc.)
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Sprains, strains and other soft tissue injuries
  • Work-related injuries
Specialists are available to treat people with incontinence, balance and dizziness problems and sports injuries.

Requirements for Physical Therapy

You must have a physician's order for physical therapy. Treatment length varies, but the goal for each patient is the same: to help maximize function and efficiency.

Treatment is covered by most insurance policies. Check with your carrier to ensure that you have adequate coverage.

Therapy also is available through home health care for people who are homebound.
