Volunteer Opportunities

To create an all-around positive experience, patient and hospital needs are matched as closely as possible to the volunteer’s interest and personal schedules.  
The following is a list of volunteer opportunities:

Book Cart

Provide a great patient experience by providing diversionary activities to patients and their guests (books, magazines, crossword puzzles, Sudoku work sheets, etc.). Visit with patients and offer support. 

Central Transportation 

Assist in transporting patients between patient care units and ancillary departments, deliver equipment and supplies and retrieve wheelchairs and carts from various locations within the hospital campus. 

Child Care Center

Assist child care staff in providing a nurturing environment for children. Help supervise children during outdoor/indoor play/work time according to Montessori philosophy.


Assist in the preparation or distribution of mail. Copy, scan, collate and file departmental materials. Deliver and collect department materials at other hospital locations. Most clerical opportunities are available Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Emergency Department 

Must be at least 18 years old and available for training for 10 to 12 hours total on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Provide support to Emergency Department staff, patients and their families and friends. Assist nurses as directed. Volunteers may also visit patients in examining rooms to lend support and provide non-medical information. 

Emergency Department Lobby

Must be at least 18 years old

Assist in the Emergency Department Lobby by functioning as a liaison between patients, their families and hospital staff members. Visit and lend support to patients and their families. 

Provide support to Emergency Department staff, patients and their families and friends. Assist nurses as directed. Volunteers may also visit patients in examining rooms to lend support and provide non-medical information. 


Fulfill various volunteer positions as assigned according to hospital needs. Duties are assigned by the director of volunteer services or designee.

Gift Shop  

Demonstrate excellent customer service and sales skills.  Assist with merchandising items, displays and routine maintenance of the gift shop.

Lobby Services

Assist with greeting, screening and directing all persons entering the hospital. Answer telephone calls and communicate hospital policies and procedures information. Utilize hospital computer system to locate patient information. Assists patrons as needed with the parking ticket kiosk.  Escort patients and family to designated locations in the hospital. 

Materials Services 

Assist with paper work, filing, cleaning, sorting, delivery of incoming goods and bringing “return goods” from departments to shipping and receiving.

Medical Library 

Assist the medical librarian with copying, filing and data entry. Duties may include stocking the patient book cart, acting as a receptionist (in person or on the phone) or other duties determined by the medical librarian. 

Patient Care Unit

Provide indirect patient care services such as visiting with patients and offering support, providing water and meal trays, transporting patients to various locations within the hospital, making unoccupied beds, and clerical assistance.

Perianesthesia Care Unit (PACU) 

Distribute juice and coffee trays to post-operative patients, transport or escort stable patients to various locations within the hospital. Assist CNA/technician with cleaning, stocking supplies and making beds/carts. Offer support, visit, listen and talk with patients and their family. 

Pharmacy Department  

Must be at least 18 years old with pharmacy technician license, and in, or applying to pharmacy school
Assist personnel in transporting "stat" medications to patient care unit for a patient. Sort returned medications and audit inventory for out-date medication while under the supervision of the registered pharmacist. Assists secretary with clerical duties.

Rehabilitation Services

Must be applying to or in a physical or occupational therapy program
Assist physical therapy and occupational therapy with various duties in support of patient care.  Help with the maintenance of patient care materials, clerical activities and perform routine errands within the hospital. Transport patients back to their room or to other areas of the hospital.  

Rotate to other physical and occupational therapy settings: outpatient main department, Galter LifeCenter, acute care, rehabilitation and extended care under the direction of a therapist.

Sterile Processing 

Help examine, fold and package surgical towels; package instruments for sterilization and transport patient care equipment from the main building to Galter Medical Pavilion.
