2015 Cancer Program Quality Improvement: A Comparison Study of Leading Infusion Pumps

by David Modica | Nov 16, 2017

A comparison study was completed in 2015. The Cancer Program requested new, updated infusion pumps for both the Galter Medical Pavilion Infusion Center and the Evanston Infusion Center. A multidisciplinary team compared two leading pumps.

The following features were reviewed and assessed:

  • One programming screen for all infusions
  • One Drug Library
  • One Brain for up to four modules
  • One power cord for up to four modules
  • Total Protection for all Infusions, including total dose and duration, bolus administration and PCA pause to prevent over-infusion of opioids
  • Actionable Intelligence to support current practices and provide data to support change for process improvement
  • Optimize revenue by capturing start and stop times

The first pump met all of the requirements. This pump allows for Standardization of all infusion types which reduces complexity and variability and decreases risk and errors while improving workflow.  The Multidisciplinary team opted for the first pump. In-services took place June 29th through July 10th, 2015. 100% of all the Infusion Center Nurses attended.

Implementation of the new pumps and Go Live successfully took place on July 14, 2015.
